Full Steam Ahead on the Famous Gotthard Rail

Winding its way through the Alps, the Gotthard Line is one of Europe’s most famous and ingeniously built mountain railroads. Rising 2079 feet on the northern site from Erstfeld to Göschenen, it has 3 spiral tunnels- the main Gotthard tunnel is 9.2 miles long. The southern slope between Airolo and Biasca descends and has four spiral tunnels. Opened in 1882, the entire stretch was electrified forty years later in 1922. This meant that the steam era on these mighty slopes was relatively short. But in the Summer of 1997, a minor sensation occurred. Just like in the “Good Old Days", steam-driven trains again rolled over the Gotthard celebrating the 150th birthday of Swiss Railways. The DESTI-Team joined the celebration and went into enthusiastic action, shooting from the tracks and cabs, from inside trains and from a specially built dray driving alongside… We are proud to present to you this outstanding historical DVD-production.
