The Bernina Express is a brilliant triumph of Swiss engineering: it is the only Swiss railway traversing the Alps “tunnel-less” and also is one of the steepest adhesion railroads in the world: it covers an elevation difference of about 5800 feet within 24 miles! The tracks are laid in such a way as to provide magnificent views of majestic mountain panoramas, emerald Alpine forests, distant glaciers, and a lake where winter rules eight months a year. Albula Railway – The famous Albula Railroad between the towns of Thusis and St. Moritz in the Swiss Canton of Graubünden is rated by experts as one of the world’s technically most demanding tracks: Between the picturesque villages of Bergün and Preda the train has to master a climb of 1350 ft over a distance of just 7.8 miles. The ingenious Swiss solved the problem with five brilliantly engineered hairpin curves laid in tunnels, two regular tunnels, nine viaducts and two mountain ledges.
