The hedonistic revelries of Carnival in Venice - the city floating on a lagoon, suspended between sea and sky - inspired Johann Strauss' exhilarating operetta, with its masked amorous intrigues enacted to the lilting rhythms of waltzes and polkas. This 1973 film translates the operetta's dreamlike atmosphere to the screen evoking the make-believe operetta city imagined in Strauss' effervescent music.
